Print Specifications

Printing services are available to artists, photographers and anyone wanting true fine art prints of their own art or photos.

I make only archival Giclée prints.  They are made with professional grade inkjet printers using fade resistant, pigment inks on acid free, fine art papers and canvases. The result is prints that have a century long lifespan.  I use papers and canvases only from top quality manufacturers. True Giclée prints have a print density of at least 300 dots per inch (dpi). However, depending on image quality and print size, some prinrs do not require 300 dpi.

I use four printers: Epson SureColor P8000, P6000 and P900 and a Canon Pro-1100. All are true Giclée printers,  All prints are on archival quality sheet and roll media, including matte canvases that are sealed with acrylic varnish, smooth and velvet matte papers, watercolor papers and Baryta luster finish papers.  Media manufacturers include Hahnemühle, Breathing Color and Red River.  My printers are profiled (calibrated) for color correction for each medium.  Media may be special ordered as needed.

Canvas prints are wrapped on stretcher bars and are ready to hang.  Canvases are "varnished" with an acrylic sealer to give them a tough finish that protects them from humidity, UV rays and wear.

Since the sides of a gallery wrap show, the canvas is extended on all four sides, usually by mirroring the image's edges.

Gallery wrapped prints are priced based on the face dimensions (not including sides) according to the table below:

Digitizing

Photo prints and original art works are photographed or scanned and minor editing is performed to bring the resulting image fairly close to the original.  The price for this is $25. This is a one-time charge. You are the owner of the image files.  Your files will be kept and backed up for future needs.  Copies of your files will be available to you on a thumb drive you provide or one I provide for $12.

Proofing

Whether you photograph the original and supply the file for printing or have me digitize it for you, editing and proofing are normally desired to closely match prints to the original.  This is done under your supervision to ensure acceptable results. Charges are based on the amount of media used, according to the price schedules above.  To reduce costs, proofing is done on small sheets with multiple proofs per sheet.  A final print of normal size is often desired.

Image Resolution

Image resolution is important for quality results.  300 pixels/inch is needed for professional grade prints.  However, 240 pixelsl/inchmay be acceptable.  For example, an 8x10 inch print needs a 2400x3000 pixel file.  But, a 1920x2400 pixel file may produce acceptable results.  An iPhone 6 takes 3024x4032 pixel images.  Dividing by 300 or 240 indicates that those images will produce high quality prints up to 10x14 inches or acceptable results up to about 12x16 inches.

Replicating Original Art

The pinnacle of my print service is reproducing original art.  The challenge is to make prints that closely match the original when compared side-by-side.  Simply scanning or photographing the original and printing the file usually fails to come close.  This is because every device or means of rendeering an image uniquely affects the hues, tones, contrast and brightness.  That's why prints from online print servcies often dissapoint.  To avoid that, my workflow has you in my studio making the crucial decisions as I direct the process and do the work.  In the end, you know exactly what you are getting and what you are paying for.

First, depending on size, I scan or photograph your art.  The scanner is calibrated to render colors correctly.  Cameras never do, so a color chart, photographed along with the art, is used to make a color correction profile.

The image is then presented on a calibrated computer monitor and edited to adjust the colors even more and to correct the tones, contrast and brightness.  This sets the stage for proof printing.

Even though the printers are calibrated, nothing is perfect so further adjustments are needed to bring the prints fully in line with the original art when viewed side-by-side under 5000 Kelvin lights.  This is necessary because there is a fundamental difference between an image rendered on a monitor that makes its own light and one on a surface that reflects ambient light.  Also, depending of surface properties, different papers render color saturation and contrast differently.  So, proof printing is needed.  In this stage, the image's appearance on the monitor no longer matters as concern shifts to making iterative adjustments that bring the proof prints closer to the original.  Often, no more than three or four proofs are needed, but there are difficult cases.  Knowing the cost (see Proofing above) of each proof sheet, you can decide when to stop because further adjustments are not significent or cost effective.

Copyrights

Except for my own art, I do not sell prints of copyrighted images.  Customers are responsible for ensuring copyright compliance for images they want printed.  Nevertheless, I reserve the right to refuse suspect images.
